About the Book
|
In 2015, author Al Perrin was voted one of the top 10 writers in Florida by the Florida Writers Association.
During an otherwise quiet evening at home, an old man and his grandson are suddenly faced with a home invasion from two thugs who want to kill the teenager. Tim has innocently witnessed a drug-related murder, and the thugs also believe he has hidden a large amount of "crack" cocaine. Grandpa, who won the Congressional Medal of Honor in Vietnam, fools them into thinking that he is just a feeble old man, and then dispatches them both with a bayonet before they can kill Tim. Both Tim and Grandpa flee in their sailboat in the middle of the night.
Together, they sail the Josephine out of Tampa Bay, and into the Straits of Florida. There, they re-name the sailboat the John B., and repaint it. Along the way, they pick up a young Cuban girl, Maresol Ortez, who is the lone survivor of a family refugee raft trying to escape to Florida. She is near death from dehydration and exposure, and Tim and Grandpa nurse her back to health. Without a family of her own, or even a country now, she joins them in their quest to start life anew somewhere else.
Throughout the book, Tim, Grandpa, and Maresol long for the "quiet life" again in middle America, along the shores of Lake Michigan. But can they escape the wrath of the Mafia drug lord John Scarlotti? A very exciting tale with a nail biting finish of heroism, self-sacrifice, and love, that is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good adventure tale.
