About the Book
|
Lucas Schmidt is 12-years-old in 1927. He slaves as a farm kid behind a beige plow horse, and lives under the toil of a father who is a German immigrant, mean, and drinks too much. Lucas finds young love with a girl named Sarah Stanley and ultimately marries her. The story carries Lucas through the dirty thirties, World War II, a son in Vietnam, a drug addicted son, the rape of his wife, murder, forgiveness, loss, pain, poverty, wealth, sin and redemption. Western Kansas dirt is the unchanging, eternal backdrop for a life of toil and wonderment.
