About the Book
|
In 2001, teacher Jacquie McTaggart accepted an early retirement offer from the Independence Iowa School District and wrote From the Teacher’s Desk, a book for parents. Now, eight years and fifty International Reading Association conferences later, she has acquiesced to popular demand and written a book for teachers.
If They Don’t Learn the Way You Teach, Teach the Way They Learn is a collection of Language Arts materials, practices, methods, booklists, Websites, teaching tips, and technology aides that appeal to and motivate today’s student learners – with a heavy emphasis on males and what it takes to get them engaged. McTaggart says many of the tips and much of the information in her book comes not from the Ivory Tower, but rather from the real experts – teachers throughout the country who work day in and day out with our nation’s children.
The book contains dozens of strategies that actually work with today’s kids (as told to McTaggart by teachers at IRA conferences and reading/writing workshops), and lists authors, books, and Websites that appeal to and motivate K-8 students. Readers will learn how to make and use chair bags, how to display books for maximum readership, and how to make kids want to read. Teachers will hear how McTaggart used chapter books when she was in the classroom fulltime, and learn what changes she would make if she had it to do over again.
Although the major portion of this book focuses on student readers, there are two excellent chapters devoted strictly to writing. Chapter 18, “Get Ready, Set, Write” contains numerous writing strategies and activities for K-3 students, whereas Chapter 19, “The Write Way” targets grades 4-12.
If They Don’t Learn the Way You Teach, Teach the Way They Learn is more than a reference book. It has a plethora of “put into practice tomorrow” teaching tips, a few common teaching practices to examine, anecdotes to enjoy, and a generous dose of humor to keep you laughing.
