About the Book
|
The Magpie Cards features the wise, enigmatic and compassionate Madam Maria Popoff and her quirky vintage dress shop in the seaside town of Margate. Poppy, a middle-aged woman, relocates from London to Margate and finds gainful employment in the shop. Things cross the threshold that have a story to tell. Poppy becomes proficient over the years at examining certain treasures that catch her eye and discovering their past. Sometimes the stories are heartwarming and pleasant but, just like life, they don't always have a fairy tale ending. Although a work of historical fiction, this novel embraces the ups and downs of life, of truly being human, of living through and navigating difficult times, and the important part that emotions play in sickness and recovery.
One day, a set of seven faded postcards arrives on the doorstep all with the same theme: the life of a fictitious Guernsey family, their wider circle of relatives, friends and employees. The wealthy Beauregard family life spans two world wars, the joys and hardships of everyday life and the terrible pain and suffering of wartime.
Above all else this book has a purpose. It's much more than the sum of historical fiction set in Guernsey featuring an old lady with a passion for chocolate. Healing knowledge is woven into the pages. Homeopathic remedies and Bach flower essences have been the author's passion for over twenty-five years and this knowledge is shared with all who choose to seek beyond its cover. Take the time to accompany Poppy upon a most insightful and compelling journey!
“To dress and mend the broken pieces. This is what we do here.”
