About the Book
I Want To Write Something Funny But I'm Too Sad is a moving collection of tough stories of women making hard choices. The stories and the novella are strongly focused on women's relationships with one another, whether they are family, lovers, or friends. Meeting sexism and homophobia, they do not always win, but they always fight for justice. The growing lesbian feminist politics of the day are a strong force, as well as a love of women. Woven throughout is a powerful love of music transforming the characters and their lives. The triumphant stories are full of delight in fun, food, sex, art, and nature while the women live in community or coupledom.

Political consequences experienced by many as gender oppression are met head on in these rebellious women living in chosen their chosen families. The stories move with wonderful motion as they tell all the different experiences the women weather. They are strong, they are fierce, they are funny. They laugh, they cry, they are brave. They learn how to live as older lesbians, drawing upon what they learned as young lesbians.

The novella opens up a world of mental illness, holocaust survival, mother and daughter, and the lesbian couple who heal with love. We learn so much from these women and hold them close in our memory.
