About the Book
Born the fifth child of poor Texas sharecroppers, young Charlie Phillips stumbled into one of the longest careers in country music history; writing a #1 hit single, receiving a coveted Gold Record, becoming Mr. Deejay U.S.A. and being inducted into the Western Swing Music Hall of Fame as well as the Panhandle Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. After 60 glorious years, he is still performing country music and western swing for his fans.

Charlie “Sugartime” Phillips spent a lifetime playing to live audiences and working with some of the most talented men and women in the business. It’s estimated Charlie recorded more than 200 songs during his career. He made regular appearances on the Louisiana Hayride, the Grand Ole Opry, the Big “D” Jamboree and Red Foley’s Ozark Jubilee. In addition to being a successful performer and recording artist, Phillips enjoyed a long radio-career working with the “Father of Country Music Radio,” Pappy Dave Stone and Ray Winkler, co-author of “Welcome to My World.”

A drunk driver tragically killed his father; one of his brothers was murdered; another brother became a highly decorated Lt. Colonel; and he became a country music legend. Charlie’s life story reads like fiction, but it’s not. After 50 years, we are still singing- sugar in the morning, sugar in the evening, sugar at suppertime, be my little honey and love me all the time.
