About the Book
|
Heartbeat
is the story of Leon Mendel, emergency physician at an inner city
trauma center, and his battle to save his own sanity amidst the madness
and chaos of the ER. It takes you full speed into the middle of a
busy trauma center, the excitement, drama, and occasional humor found
there. It takes you at equal speed inside a mind becoming unhinged,
struggling to heal itself while maintaining the outward appearance
of normality.
Leon is an expert at rapid diagnosis and resuscitation of the critically
ill. But Leon is becoming psychotic. Several deaths in the ER leave
him with a growing fear of death. He feels it surrounding him, whispering
to him. He begins to hear dying patients? souls escaping. An expert
at dealing with mental illness in others, he sees it emerging in himself.
Leon encounters Rita Thal, the alcoholic mother of a terminally ill
teenager. She senses Leon?s turmoil and wants to help him. But will
Leon allow her to come that close? Will he let her lead him through
the maze of his memories to the surprising source of his mental anguish?
Heartbeat is at once a technothriller, love story, and
psychodrama. It is a compelling rollercoaster of a story, an adventure
of the mind.
