About the Book
After many years in the health care and insurance industries, Kathy was struck by the reality that health care services could better align with health, and that the chaos and expense in receiving these services could be better coordinated. Health care reform began these changes but at what cost?

A great shift in how we receive health care services is underway--one that places more responsibility for both cost sharing and decision making on patients. While it may seem confusing and overwhelming, it is possible to learn about health care reform, why it had to change, where to go from here and most importantly what to do.

Health care reform, also called Obamacare, had to happen. While it is not perfect, it did break the seal on the problems with poor quality and unsustainable cost increases that were bankrupting states and bankrupting individuals. Obamacare continues to shake up the world of health care delivery. To survive it everyone needs a clear understanding of not only the issues but how to use focused approaches to negotiate health decisions, navigate health care systems and advocate for personal health needs.

Health care is a complicated business and I've done my best to simplify all of it. This book provides the roadmap to become a more informed health care consumer with simple and organized directions. There are three sections and twelve chapters.

Section One (Chapters One and Two) explores the ten forces of change (both beyond and within your control), events that brought the insurance and health care industry to its knees, and why health care reform had to happen; Section Two (Chapters Three and Four) provides a summary of the 12 major changes brought about by health care reform (insurance and health care delivery) and where we are headed over the next few decades; Section Three (Chapters Five through Twelve) defines the eight principles of personal health management that guide you through the maze of care decisions and self-care management. This section includes practical advice and resources to use to improve health and navigate the health care system.
