About the Book
The year is 1966. Harlen Sims is a bull riding champion on the professional rodeo circuit. A man somewhat dogged by bad luck of late, he falls in deep when he accidentally overhears a conversation between the two leaders of a powerful crime syndicate in Laramie, Wyoming. What he has heard puts him on a run for his life, as agents of this syndicate—a cast of characters ranging from bumbling fools to sharp-minded, highly skilled assassins—pursue him through cities from Billings to Denver, across the high plains and through mountainous backcountry.

While trying to stay a step ahead of these “chase dogs,” Harlen stumbles upon a true friend, an Ojibwa Indian on the run from the law, named Jake Pouchot. Harlen also learns that he is the father of a boy, the mother a Crow Indian, Polly Yellowtree. Their lives on the brink of ruin, their backs to the wall, Harlen, Jake, and Polly hatch a plan to “hit back” at their pursuers and put an end to the threat. Not so easy, and they must learn some hard lessons about themselves along the way.
