About the Book
|
He obtained his chemical engineering degree from the University of California at Berkeley before going to Chicago Medical School. Today, he is a versatile and experienced neurologist whose attention to detail serves his patients well.
But this fast-moving memoir is not about Dr. Aquitania's professional exploits. Instead, it tells the story of many extracurricular adventures that have involved challenges outside the workplace. In TAKING THE BULL BY THE HORNS, this energetic individual describes how he has faced diverse and difficult situations head-on in his time away from the office.
Ray Aquitania takes us to Pamplona, Spain, where he survived his once-in-a-lifetime experience in El Encierro, the Running of the Bulls. The exotic nation of Iceland with its natural wonders was the locale for one of his more recent explorations. There, he took part in a glacier trek and made his debut in ice climbing. During medical school, the author spearheaded a skydiving venture in the state of Wisconsin. That would be the first of many natural highs for this risk taker. On a flight returning home from a vacation in Budapest, Hungary, Dr. Aquitania was faced with an unexpected medical emergency that could not wait until office hours. How he and the airline crew dealt with a passenger in need is revealed. And in what was supposed to be a brief stopover at an undisclosed international airport, he and his girlfriend became involved in a thorny situation that was out of their control.
The author has had his share of athletic pursuits. Kayaking in Santa Barbara, California, several years ago was the author's first exposure to this popular and sometimes strenuous activity. Little did he know that Mother Nature would make his first time in the water potentially dangerous but also memorable. During a pickup basketball game a couple of years ago, though, he fell victim to a painful injury that threatened his livelihood. He relates how he was able to eventually recover from that setback. In recent years, Dr. Aquitania would take on other challenging sports that tested his drive to succeed. After his girlfriend dared him a few years ago, he completed his first of a series of grueling marathon races, which he describes in great detail. Later, a friend introduced him to the discipline of duathlon, his first foray into the world of multi-sport events. Ray Aquitania races in triathlons to this day, and he gives us insight on how this intense competition has emerged as his sport of choice in the last two years.
As each of the above adventures unfolds before our very eyes, the details expressed and the imagery used by the author grab our attention and don't let go. In the process, he is able to show us how these experiences have shaped his life. And in sharing these anecdotes, Ray E. Aquitania, M.D., encourages all of us to confront any challenge with confidence and tact-- in other words, to take the bull by the horns!
