About the Book
Gerry’s Real World Guide to Pharmacokinetics & Other Things is different to any textbook you have read before. Read how a curmudgeonly, older and experienced anesthesiologist with a serious attitude problem, Doctor Gerry, teaches his sometimes surly resident, Doctor Bob, the basic principles of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anesthetic drugs in real-life situations in the operating theater. As you read this book you will not only gain insights in the physiology of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anesthetic drugs, but also learn mastery of the incredibly sophisticated mathematics required to understand and apply these sciences – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and even division!

After reading this book you will understand the pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic reasons why operations seem to end just as patients are finally adequately anesthetized, how to assess new drugs offered by pharmaceutical companies, how to appropriately administer i.v. bolus drugs in many clinical situations, and the real facts about intravenous infusions in anesthetic practice. As if this were not enough, you will also learn “Other Things”, such as how to calculate how many seconds you will remain conscious if your airplane suddenly decompresses at 10,000 meters altitude, how long you can survive after stopping breathing, to philosophize about anesthesia and death, the pharmacokinetics of thrombocytes during operations, etc, etc.

Despite these bombastic claims, this is a serious textbook written by an experienced anesthesiologist with considerable experience writing about, and teaching all these subjects. It really does teach all these things, albeit in a humorous and tongue-in-cheek style. This book is a must for all anesthesiologists wishing to learn the basic elements of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anesthetic drugs as applied during everyday anesthetic practice.
