About the Book
|
King Charles I demanded the Divine Right to rule England at his own despotic whim. About half of England--including Parliament--opposed him. In 1642 Charles moved his court and army to Oxford, to take over the city, disrupt the University, and fight the ensuing civil war from there.
A worse tyrant was already established there. Dowager Lady Heath, a tiny fragile-looking old woman with damask cheeks, blue eyes like bubbles of chilled glass, searing tongue, ferocious will, and ebony cane had no opposition at all. Not children, grandchildren, court, nor the noble suiters she selected for her hapless grandaughter Cecily’s reluctant hand. (Noble, rich and preferably old, so the Dowager Dragon could rule his estate.) Even King Charles himself and his spoiled queen took care never to meet Madam Dragon and her vicious little dog Caesar.
Enter Loyal and Onyx: one a cheeky, greedy maidservant with wide jaw, rebellious chestnut hair and cleft chin; the other an arrogant black kitten. Neither knew the meaning of obedience. Freedom, they believed, was to Chose--and they chose to do as they pleased. Despite the distractions of war, plague, Madam’s ursine daughter and spoiled heir, three very attractive Highland Scots, chaos in Oxford, a suavely sinister old suitor, conspiracy, plotters against the royalist cause and some determined would-be assassins, Loyal organized Madam Dragon’s cowed victims.
