On December 27, 1967, while on a road trip to Florida from California to do some surfing and find himself, Rob found out he had been drafted. He didn’t know much about the war but was surrounded by the Anti-War movement. He spent his trip back to California deciding whether or not to serve and talking to the people he met on the way home. This was the most difficult decision of his life. Rob had flunked out of college, and the road trip was designed to help him find himself, but serving in the military was not one of the options he was considering. He decided to serve and committed to making it a good experience. He then spent almost two years in the Army. After Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training, he found out he was on his way to Vietnam. He spent 14 months in Vietnam in a non-combat assignment in Saigon, from June of 1968 to August of 1969. He came of age in Vietnam. He met a Vietnamese woman there who not only helped him come of age but also introduced him to love. This is a very different Vietnam War story. Rob was driven to write this story by discussions he had with hundreds of veterans who served during that period. Almost three million soldiers served in the Vietnam War, each with a unique experience; yet, most of the stories we hear about Vietnam tell a very different tale. I hope this book offers readers a fresh perspective on the Vietnam War.

Rob was a reluctant soldier in Vietnam who came of age in that War Zone. His experience was not like most of the stories written about that war. He was at risk, but mostly from internal issues. He overcame some of those issues and discovered love in that place. |
