About the Book
|
Talismanic characters are believed to influence others, attract attention, and offer divine protection.
Inspired by a true story, Powers of Persuasion follows four such figures, each one a living talisman rooted in the mystic soil of South Carolina’s Low Country.
A doctor who treats without a license and taps into something deeper than medicine. A charismatic prosecutor whose empire rests on “power, prestige, and privilege.” An unorthodox sheriff who rarely carries a gun but wields influence like a weapon. And a visionary school leader who transforms a crumbling schoolhouse into a sanctuary for learning and hope. Their stories intertwine in a world shaped by hoodoo, hidden power, and the enduring battle between justice and control.
Step into a world where belief is power, and where magic is as real as the law. Watch out for dem Boo Hags and don’t let Doctor Buzzard put a spell on you.

Powers of Persuasion captivates and enthralls on so many levels. Adventure is one thrill all its own, but knowing that this fictional novel is inspired by real people at a poignant time in history adds power and depth. Mike Wojcik passionately and admirably honors a cast of formidable, colorful characters who coexisted in and around Beaufort, South Carolina, from the early twentieth century. The tapestry of law, eccentricity, hoodoo, Gullah culture, Prohibition, and the fight for a Black school’s rights paints a fascinating picture of American history. Having read the book, I really want to see the movie, too!

Powers of Persuasion takes you into the annals of the Deep South of yesteryear. Mike Wojcik delves into the life of one notable Black school principal who tirelessly sought to advance his race in society by inviting world-renowned Black celebrities to visit his school. He also carried out other endeavors while befriending certain leading White citizens of authority, and at times spurning others. Mike writes about these individuals and introduces both ordinary and flamboyant characters who resided in that part of the South, creating vibrant and adventurous scenes from the lives of those who lived long ago. A great work of fiction inspired by a true story to be forever remembered by his readers
