The book is written in a style reminiscent of Haruki Murakami: fantasy is never far from reality. The book is about ghosts, childhood fears, magic and love. To distance herself from domestic violence, a little girl takes refuge in her secret garden, where she tries to meet her deceased brothers, who died when they were still infants. She tries to hear their voices on an old radio, plays hide and seek with their shadows in the park, and summons them by means of a magic ceremony. In the meantime, in Japan, a sad little boy lives a great love with a young girl, who dies chasing after her magic bird. But they promised they would love each other for ever. But they promised each other they would love each other for ever. She comes back as a yurei (a Japanese ghost) to remind him of his oath. At first, it's fine with him, but as he gets older, he would like to be able to date girlfriends without the ghost interfering. So he and his friends come up with all sorts of things to keep the yurei away. Will Adele and Junishiro be able to leave the ghosts of their past behind and love themselves to the fullest?
