About the Book
|
Gadara: The Story of the Gadarene Demoniac is a work of fiction based on the true story of Jesus casting a multitude of demons from a man into a vast herd of swine that were feeding nearby. This happens early in the story, and a lot of careful research went into not only bringing that moment to life but the storm on the Sea of Galilee that proceeds it.
The miracle is performed, and the main character is established. The demonic 'Legion,' as he was known before the miracle, was a hideous beast that was totally transformed. Jesus is met by the people of the city and told to depart. 'Jason,' the former demoniac's real name, wants to go with Jesus, but he forbids him. He instead tells him to simply share what God had done for him. It is a mission Jason takes very seriously, for once he's delivered Jason is a man of incredible faith.
And so, the fictional account of Jason, the former Gadarene demoniac begins half-way through chapter two and continues. My story interacts with the Bible, but in no way re-interprets it. I've strived to achieve historical, as well as biblical feasibility. Jason discovers he was given the authority to heal the sick and cast out demons in the name of Jesus; no different than the disciples of Jesus before and after the crucifixion. He affects the life of many and soon has a reputation: both good and bad. It's true that Jesus and his disciples returned to the Decapolis several months later and were well received.
I took great care not to interfere with the scriptures. There are many actual scriptures from the King James Bible contained within the book, where appropriate, and all are referenced. All of the words of Jesus are his actual words. I had to create a little dialogue with some of the disciples for interaction with the story, but again only enough to make the story feasible. The beliefs in the story are basic biblical concepts, as well as the apocryphal book of Enoch; the origin of the demons. These were popular and widely accepted writings in the first century. Peter and Jude mention it in their writings. This might make my book a bit controversial. I hope so.
I wrote this book to be enjoyed. I believe it has something to offer a wide variety of people. It is an epic novel with action, adventure, romance, and emotion with a touch of humor. I've endeavored to create characters: average people from different walks of life all impacted by a powerful and loving God. The book offers a slightly different point of view: Pagan Greeks confronted with the word of God by one of their own; A strong, fearless, lovable former demoniac with a mission. And a past.
Although Jason is delivered and restored in every way, his body remains covered with scars from years of cutting himself with stones. The new man he has become is self-conscious about it, but despite this he delivers two other demoniacs and they form a fellowship. Jason also meets the love of his life, which doesn't start off well. Jason's challenges are relentless. Its a roller coaster ride with some surprises, as well as some good teaching along the way.
The book has no profanity except for words that have been used in the Bible. There is romance with affection, but no graphic sex. There is some violence necessary for the story, but nothing overly graphic. And, of course, there is demonic activity depicted. Some of the description comes from years of reading and witnessing real demonic possession caught on video, as well as life experience. It was written to be realistic.
This book was written also to raise awareness and compassion for the lost. Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost. It's not flesh and blood we fight against, but spiritual wickedness in high places, which is what this work is really all about. That's why the book is dedicated to Jesus, and to the lost.
