About the Book
Be My Enemy is a story about an American couple in Japan on a two-year contract to teach English. Hannah grew up in Germany under Hitler, and finds many parallels between the Germany of her childhood and Japanese insularity. Hannah's encounter with Japanese culture explodes into her consciousness and causes long-repressed childhood memories to surface. Remembering the trauma of her childhood sends Hannah into depression, and Japan becomes her enemy.
