About the Book
|
For a brief
two-year period at mid-twentieth century a new gold rush began in
the United States. The gold was yellow carnotite, a primary uranium
ore with a guaranteed high price from the federal government. Jeeps,
small airplanes, and Geiger counters had replaced the prospector's
mule, pick and gold-pan. A few fortunes were made. Most of the big
strikes were discovered from the air by pilot-geologist teams.
This is the story of one small exploration company and it's pilot/geologist
team flying a Piper Super Cub. They concentrated their search for
uranium in a region west of the Rocky Mountains. Geologists call
it the Colorado Plateau, a vast area of the American Southwest watered
by the Colorado River and its tributaries, mostly within the States
of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. The story comes to a
climax with a tempting discovery in the limestone deposits of New
Mexico.
The book is written as a pilot's memoir. In alternate chapters the
author looks back at his experience as a pilot in the postwar propeller
navy when he began flying along with about two thousand other high-school
graduates who joined the Navy at the end of World War II. In a postwar
experiment that would, in theory, make them equal to graduates of
the Naval Academy, they earned their Navy wings and were sent to
fleet squadrons holding the rank of midshipman. This group of young
pilots flew every type of aircraft in the Navy's arsenal, wearing
the gold half-stripe and anchors of a first-class midshipman, but
not until the end of a two-year contract did they received an officer's
commission.
Finally, the author looks forward after a two-decade hiatus to yet
another twenty years of pleasure flying in the eighties and nineties.
But mostly this is a story about youthful adventure, visions of
wealth, and the allure of flying written for people of all ages
wishing to escape the ordinary.
