About the Book
|
The Rising Voices of Latino Change Agents in Education is a compilation of riveting personal stories written by twelve educators in a five state area who were trained as school change agents in the 1970's. The program at Texas Tech University was funded by a federal grant and loosely based on the work of Warren Bennis, a respected author and international expert on leadership and organizational change. This book on Latino change agents joins other recent Latino/Chicano contributions to social justice and education reform literature.
This collection reflects the experiences, lessons learned, and wisdom gleaned by those immersed in a historic time: from segregation to integration; from college only for the elite...to the idea of higher education for all; from linguistically different as special education to linguistically different as bilingual education; from tracking to mainstreaming; and the list goes on and on.
In many ways, this anthology represents a passing of the torch to a future generation of educators who wish to make significant changes in our school systems which are still in need of radical transformation in the 21st century. This body of work demonstrates what a small committed group of people can accomplish with the right training and strong conviction that "all children can learn." These change agents began the process, and now they reach out to those younger to carry it forward.
