God spoke one word that changed Steve’s life forever. That word: Alaska! Steve moved to Alaska and served five years as missionary pastor of a church in the “bush.” In Alaska, he experienced numerous adventures and misadventures, involving hunting, fishing, firefighting, and riding snowmobiles, skiffs, small planes, and Medivac jets.

The Adventures of Tundra Bubba begins with a rather humorous account of God calling Steve to Alaska, Steve’s surrender to that call, and the subsequent move. Being from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Steve found the culture and climate tremendously different from that to which he was accustomed. Steve determined to immerse himself into the culture and embrace whatever adventure God sent his way. And God would send a lot of adventure Steve’s way.

Back home Steve had developed into quite the couch potato, getting all the adventure he needed from television. Shortly before he moved to Alaska, however, he read John Eldredge’s Wild at Heart, a book calling Christian men to surrender to the spirit of adventure within them. Steve was excited by what he read but failed to put actions to his feelings – that is, until God moved Steve to bush Alaska.

With Wild at Heart fresh in his heart, Steve was open to experience all that his corner of Alaska bush country had to offer. He quickly shared his desire for adventure with just the person to lead him in his quest for adventure – a Yup'ik Eskimo named Bobby. Over the years, Steve and Bobby would share many adventures and misadventures. Not all Steve’s adventures would be shared with Bobby, but Bobby was the catalyst for many of them.

Lance, an Aleut Indian, also led Steve to adventure. Although Lance was a much more careful soul than was Bobby, Lance and Steve would experience together much of what the Alaska wild had to offer. Lance and Bobby both taught Steve how to enjoy the adventurous land in which they lived, and Steve is deeply indebted to them. This book would not be possible but for their willingness to take him under their wings and ensure that, for Steve, the call of God met the call of the wild.

Come join Steve as he ventures upriver on moose hunts and across the tundra hunting caribou, and as he jumps a beaver dam in a skiff, flies in small planes, fights fires, rides snowmobiles, and much, much more. The adventure awaits!
