The anchor story tells of a young matron whose life was interrupted by a devastating earthquake while her spice cupcakes cooled on the counter. Come away and walk with Jean in her ancestors’ footsteps as she learns the origins of her family’s lemon tarts. Sweet. Celebrate with Keith when he convinces his folks their Scandinavian holiday supper need not include lutefisk. Salty. Play lost and found as you clean cupboards with Karla and her grandma. Bittersweet. Meet Peyton’s wild grandmother who has big plans for her afterlife. Spicy. Triumph with Gary when he concocts a dinner his wife can truly enjoy. Savory. Laugh with Alice as uninvited guests spoil the cocoa. Surprise. Learn with Suzanne the lessons of love with food and feed with love. Love.

Thom Rock pursues the elusive perfect pickle. “The power of sour is something our grandparents understood well. Canning, pickling and preserving were necessary elements of their economy. Food was something to be thought about carefully in a time before there was a grocery store on every corner stocking whatever you might wish, whether it was in season or not. But I find myself wondering if there might be more to sour than simple preservation, and that women like Gram knew what that was. Whatever they put up in those gleaming glass jars, whether brined or vinegared, was not only sustaining but symbolic. It was the present carried into the future: a certain hopefulness, perhaps. Or, maybe they canned as a way of remembering the past. Maybe they understood some secret about how the counterweight of sour makes the sweetness of memory endure.”

Joan Tiffany Doran ponders food traditions intrinsic to family. “Considering how central food is to life and to family life in particular, it's no surprise that all kinds of food traditions are intrinsic to whatever else families share, especially as part of celebrations. However else family members may differ from each other ordinarily, when it comes to what should be served on one special day or another, all seem to unite and dig in their heels in protest at even the slightest menu change. This is true even if nobody really likes candied yams or creamed onions: if we always have them, then we always have them.

“Even today in our grown-up family, while some latitude is allowed in the Christmas dinner menu, there is no deviation when it comes to dessert. Even though a few homemade cookies may be tucked in around the edges, whichever family members are around the table expect to top off the feast with a frozen ice cream roll, no substitutes. To dare otherwise would be to invite mutiny entirely out of keeping with the birthday of the Prince of Peace.”

The authors serve up a mélange of memories. Savor the stories and the recipes.
