The Grand Coalition is about the social political events, and the political developments in Kenya between the year 2002, when Kenya African National Union (KANU), the party that had ruled the country since independence in 1963, was replaced by National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), and the year 2008, when the country was forced into a coalition government, mediated by Kofi Anan, the former UN Secretary General, after a hotly contested election of December 2007.
The events are described largely through wa-Wacoco, a fictional character, and by conversations with Professor Ndibo, also a fictional character in the book.
