It is a self-help workbook for presentation skills and an all-round approach encouraging you to prepare a speech or presentation on three essential parallel levels.

The preparation of your topic. The book stimulates you to develop ideas in a creative way, to be passionate and convincing, no matter how ‘technical’ the subject. It introduces the concept of structured flexibility for the creation of your content. With the ‘flexi-structure’ you prepare to adapt to the varying responses of your ‘live’ audience and still get your messages across. Most presentation skills books encourage speakers to ‘guess’ in advance the expectations of the audience, yet they give no recommendations of what to do when those expectations turn out to be different!

The preparation of your frame of mind. Using your everyday life as training ground, the workbook helps you develop your Emotional Intelligence. You will enlarge your awareness about attitudes, emotions, thought patterns and beliefs about your topic. Feeling and observing your own point of view while you prepare, you will also try on the shoes of your future listeners. Body language is shown as a wonderful tool of introspection to then achieve congruence between mind and body when addressing your audience. Thanks to your preparation, your body will naturally match your words when speaking. You will also train to take your antennas out, so as to capture the changing mood and needs of your ‘live’ audience during delivery. Speaking with the audience rather than to the audience requires such enlarged sensitivity. The goal is to prepare and understand the functioning of negative emotions to then deal with them when they arise.

Your physical preparation. You learn to overcome stage fright, as well as, to create and keep a resourceful state through specific exercises for posture, breathing technique and voice production. It also warns you about the traps of ‘the reading mode’ and ‘the presentation mode’ when addressing your audience.

The Workbook takes you through a one-month programme, which can be shortened to twelve days or less, guiding you through four phases. With stimulating questions and exercises, together, we go from the conception, to the actual delivery of the speech or presentation.

It is made for people who have little time at their disposal. It stimulates your mind to go into ‘backstage mode’ when appropriately challenged, the unconscious then finds ideas for the speech while your focus is back on everyday work. It uses every day life as training ground for your Emotional Intelligence, therefore, there is no need to set aside special time for those exercises. It encourages you to prepare physically for the delivery, not using more than twenty minutes per week or phase.

Speaking With your Audience is essentially a workbook for Public speaking, however its ambition is to help you improve the quality of your everyday exchanges through the development of your Emotional Intelligence.
