PINCH HITTER is the poignant story about David Robbins—a middle-aged electronics salesman who fulfills a childhood dream of playing baseball for his hometown team.

A superior teen athlete, David fantasized about becoming a big league ballplayer until his older brother—a highly-scouted pitcher—was seriously injured during a high school team practice. At the request of a friend, he ends his self-imposed abstention from organized ball and agrees to play in an amateur league game at the same high school field on which his brother was injured. While displaying superlative hitting instincts during that game, he’s discovered by the manager of the San Diego Armadas—a major league club besieged by injuries and in dire need of offensive help while in the heat of a divisional race. Impressed with David’s hitting abilities and knowledge of the game, the manager invites him to a team workout. The ensuing events astound the San Diego fans and the entire baseball community.

Signed on as a late-inning pinch hitter, David quickly learns to cope with the fans and an overzealous media. He soon discovers the cost of celebrity, however, and is forced to reveal a family secret.

Through it all, David learns that sometimes even crazy dreams come true.

Reviews
Dean Whitney's passion and love for the game of baseball is beyond apparent through his words in Pinch Hitter. A truly great tale of what makes baseball so special, Pinch Hitter reminds us all why we watch.
- Darren Smith, XX Sports Radio Personality and co-host of “Too Much Show” and “Padres BP”
The plot is deceptively simple, and the characters are few and well defined. This is a feel good book. If you are looking for a few hours of escapism, Pinch Hitter will hit the spot. There are no evil villains to vanquish, and no world that needs saving, just a great uplifting story. I really like Dean Whitney’s story telling approach, he has taken a subject that obviously he knows a great deal about and managed to make it appeal to non baseball fans. He takes the time to explain the terminology and strategy of the game making this a story accessible to any reader.
- Simon Barrett, Blogger's News Network
This book is, first and foremost, a book that makes you feel good. Whitney obviously is an aficionado of baseball and describes the action well. He maintains the heroics within reasonable limits and the statistics accurate. In spite of all the doom and gloom in today’s world, it is a story that provides one with a feeling that nice things really could happen.
- John M. Manhold, Fascinating Authors
