About the Book
|
This
is a story of an Irish couple and their infant daughter coming to
America shortly after the turn of the 20th century. Why they came
separately makes this story unique.
They settled in Shrewsbury, New Jersey and raised seven children and
had a positive impact on the lives of their grandchildren. These were
the days when families stayed together as a unit and shared laughter
and tears.
The author recounts his memories of growing up as a member of this
family and relates how they and he survived the Great Depression and
World War II.
"Mom" and "Pop" Ahern sent their only three sons into the battles
of Europe and Asia and waited for their return. In the meantime, they
prayed and adhered to the premise that "life must go on".
In these days of uncertainty, we are witnesses to how families coped
and how they enjoyed each other's company. There are many episodes
in the book that will bring tears to your eyes and many other episodes
that will bring tears of laughter as you become an interested bystander
to the shananigans of the characters which you will see emerge.
For those of you who experienced these times, you will be brought
back to relive them and this story will trigger your own memories.
Those of the younger generation who couldn't imagine what it was like
to live without television, jet travel, and the internet, will see
that countless numbers of us survived without these modern conveniences.
All of our emotions will be tapped while reading this family biography.
It is a love story of the best kind of love; unselfish love of those
who give their love while expecting nothing in return.

New Jersey and upstate New York in the 30s and 40s star in this heartwarming episodic biography of the fun loving, Irish Catholic, Ahern clan. This is the America many of us grew up loving.
