In The Entrepreneurial Spirit: The Jua Kali Micro and Small Enterprises of Kenya, Dr. Daniel C. Macaria explores the motivation that drives and sustains the Jua Kali entrepreneurs in the developing economy of Kenya. The book is based on research, and looks at the factors and motivation behind the creation and growth of micro enterprises and the hurdles that these entrepreneurs have to overcome to stay in business.
The micro and small entrepreneurs of Kenya operate mostly in open spaces under the intense sun. This practice has earned them the name Jua Kali, which means “intense sun” in Kiswahili.
The entrepreneurial spirit behind micro and small enterprises (MSEs) has enabled them to survive and become an important sector of the economy of Kenya. With visions of expanded businesses, improved lives, and dreams of providing good education for their children, the Jua Kali – otherwise referred to as the informal sector – is extremely important to the developing economy of Kenya. The sector is responsible for over 90 percent of all the jobs created every year. Yet they operate in difficult, sometimes unfriendly environments.
Inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of these micro and small entrepreneurs in Kenya, Dr. Macaria has explored this fascinating development, researching for his doctoral dissertation on strategic behaviors of MSEs and the general environment in which they operate.
He also looks at the interest that this informal sector has generated in Kenya since the late 1980s, but questions the relevance and the value of assistance programs provided to the sector by international development agencies. He observes that many of the programs have not benefited the individual entrepreneur and have fallen short of providing an enabling environment for the amazing potential the sector has.
Dr. Macaria brings new thinking to the concept of strategy as implicit tacit knowledge that facilitates decision choices, and argues that the strategic behavior of micro and small entrepreneurs must be understood and incorporated into assistance programs if these are to benefit the entrepreneurs. This can be achieved through assistance programs that are designed based on the entrepreneurs’ needs rather than providing off-the-shelf programs that are invariably of little relevance to the entrepreneur. For this to happen, direct consultations must be established with the MSEs.
Dr. Macaria advocates the creation of enabling environments that would allow the entrepreneurial spirit to move the MSEs to profitable, competitive levels of operation. They need greater official recognition than generally accorded to them, and better focused, better coordinated, assistance programs.
