About the Book
|
Larell,
a gifted 17 year old girl destined to join the repressive--and telepathic--ruling
elite of the planet Nerth, defies her fate and runs away from school.
She falls in with a dissident band of craftsmen who are determined
to rebuild the technology that was lost after an ancient, devastating
space war. Larell discovers her true destiny when she encounters a
survivor of the ancient war, Ariadne--who turns out to be a sentient
spaceship.
Larell and Ariadne form an intimate, telepathic bond. But the partnership
poses a threat to the planet's ambitious ruler, Vanaedis, whose hatred
for all technology drives her to seek the destruction of any progressive
influences. And she is not about to allow a mere girl and an evil
machine to stand in her way. So Larell and Ariadne naturally end up
at the top of her hit list.
The conflict escalates as Larell is embroiled in a series of adventures,
from kidnapping to attempted assassination. In the course of the struggle,
Larell and a young inventor, Kylan, are drawn closer together and
fall in love. Meanwhile, their dissident band has become the spearhead
of a growing opposition to Vanaedis' regime. Ultimately, the
future of the entire planet rests on the success or failure of their
battle for independence.
